American born and Thailand raised, Rae Threat has established herself as one of the most exciting artists in L.A. today.
Rae is renowned for her alternative approach to photography and unique ability to merge the underground art and music scene and the LGBTQ community, citing notable feminist queer porn icon Courtney Trouble to label her as the “celebrity photographer” of the queer feminist scene in San Francisco.
Rae was the first ever photographer to feature women in a lookbook for men’s skatewear clothing line, Mishka (Fall 2011, Spring 2012, Spring 2014). Past projects also include producing and photographing Fleshbot’s iconic photoset featuring genderqueer advocate Jiz Lee and Stoya (2011), Mad Decent Records’s first fashion lookbook featuring Skrillex and Diplo (2014), and a design collaboration with Actual Pain Clothing (2013).
Rae has exhibited in galleries internationally from L.A. and San Francisco to Turkey, Vienna, and Berlin. Her first curated art show, “ALT to the ALT”, which featured artists Eon McKai, Carlos Batts, and Steak Mtn, was a highlighted exhibit with Month of Photography LA (2011). Her street photography work with GroupLA was a featured showcase at the LA ART Show (2009) and installation at the San Diego Lafayette Hotel (2013) before being archived as permanent exhibits at the USC Library (Los Angeles) and The Huntington Museum (Pasadena, CA).
Threat Films marks the next logical progression for Rae as she continues to explore challenging views and thought-provoking subjects. Current projects include a feature film documentary about Thailand’s Trans activists and their fight for equal rights, a feature documentary about women advocating against online harassment, co-producing a Bye Felipe / Change.org video campaign to help end unsolicited dick pics on the internet, exhibiting in an art show advocating for sex workers’ rights at SOMArts in San Francisco, and co-developing a video art installation with filmmaker Leslie Foster for Level Ground‘s LGBTQ Film Festival 2017.
Rae is the current artist-in-residence at Level Ground.
